    mid-autumn!
    9.24.2010
okay, so after submitting my weekly assignment and changing my blogskin to something more plain and visible, i finally can start on my mooncake post, despite the fact that
    mid autumn is long over.

so, ive always loved going around food fairs and exhibitions, seeing things that ive never before. & during this mid autumn festival, many shopping centres contributed their atrium to organise mooncake fairs, exhibiting many different types of moon cakes, traditional & modern. its really amazing how many shops can diversify and come up with their own unique styles of 'moon cake', breaking free of the traditional definition of one with thick crust and its lotus seed paste. while walking around takashimaya mooncake fair, the one that caught my attention the most was the one from TWG.

TWG is a tea company with two cafes (also known as tea salons) in Singapore, specialising in of course, tea, and desserts. i've been there a couple of times myself & really loved their hospitable service and tea flavoured macarons! for their mooncakes, they have got fillings infused with different teas such as the Singapore breakfast tea, moonlit night tea, French Earl Grey tea etc, in both baked and snow skin. this was definitely the one that appealed to me the most!

moving on, we see how chocolate specialist like Godiva has decided to tap into this business opportunity and came up with creations in the shape and in the name of the familiar mooncake, but note, this is pure chocolate filled with chocolate ganache! yummmmmmm!

these definitely look like a game of Chinese chess that you've seen in the olden Chinese shows or in your school's recreation club. but no, they are actually edible mooncakes shaped like it! traditional flavours, but not such a traditional outlook!

okay, im not so much impressed with the shape or flavours of the mooncakes from starbucks, but the fact that they actually produce them! starbucks is usually linked to the hot topic of globalisation, and how its coffee is brought to the rest of the world from the West. & yet, take a look at how business minded people have actually thought of even selling them. well done, starbucks!

last but not least, i would like to talk about Gobi's mooncake. these candid chestnut with salted white chocolate ganache fillings in a thin crunchy chocolate coating is topped with a round edible sugar print of Chinese floral designs to retain that tinge of Chinese-ness. i've personally tried these exquisite mooncakes (cause i was working there) but im not exactly a huge fan of salty tasting chestnut paste.

really impressed and amazed at how one thing can inspire and bring about so many different forms of the same product, drifting away from the traditional ideas that have always existed, and we have indeed seen the effects of globalisation being well played, and the improving marketing strategies that businesses have adopted to compete and survive in today's economy.
